The conclusion of our test chefs is that if you’re buying at retail prices, it is virtually impossible to feed four people properly for such a low cost. If you’ve got a $10 note, a pot and a bare cupboard, forget about it.

…Duh. This is the problem I’ve always had with things like this: they assume you’ve got a full pantry with all the sort of ‘supplemental’ ingredients you’ll need. The article goes on to say “You can’t buy one-quarter of a bunch of coriander and you can’t buy half a lemon,” which pretty much hits that nail right on the head.
